Chesterfield are the early pace setters after crushing Bournemouth 3-0 at their own Fitness First Stadium. Derek Niven on 47, Colin Larkin after 62 minutes and Paul Shaw in added time scored the goals that sent the 12/5 Spireites to the summit of League One.

Port Vale welcomed Leyton Orient to the third tier by inflicting an opening day defeat on them. Leon Constantine struck a brace for the even money Valiants after 43 and 72 minutes before debutante Akpo Sodje added a third six minutes later.

Cheltenham Town enjoyed an opening day victory at 9/2, the largest odds of the afternoon, at play off losers Swansea City. Kayode Odejayi opened the scoring after 48 minutes and Grant McCann struck on 54. Pint sized striker Leon Knight halved the deficit 13 minutes from time but the Robins held on for victory.

Last season's play off semi finalists Huddersfield Town were beaten by Gillingham 2-1 at the Priestfield Stadium. The 13/10 Gills had Matt Jarvis to thank after he scored after 57 minutes while debutante Dean McDonald added a second goal 10 minutes later. Gary Taylor-Fletcher gave the Terriers hope nine minutes from the end.

New Brentford manager Leroy Rosenior got off to a winning start as Blackpool were beaten 1-0 at Griffin Park. Oli Skulason struck the match's decisive goal for the 11/10 Bees after 74 minutes.

Rotherham United are set to struggle this season after a first day defeat by visiting Brighton & Hove Albion added to their 10 point deduction woe. Alex Revell struck the 6/4 winner for the visitors after 43 minutes.

Substitute Enoch Showunmi scored the winning goal against Scunthorpe United on his debut for Bristol City. Former Luton Town striker Showunmi fired in on 69 to seal a winning bet at odds of 6/10.

Over 12,000 people, the largest crowd for 35 years, witnessed Carlisle United beat Doncaster Rovers at Brunton Park. Paul Murray needed just four minutes to net the decisive goal for the 6/4 Cumbrians.

Pre season favourites Nottingham Forest narrowly defeated Bradford City 1-0 at the City Ground. Julian Bennett struck after 10 minutes and that was enough to secure victory at odds of 7/10.

Ronnie Moore enjoyed a winning start to his tenure as Tranmere Rovers boss by defeating previous club Oldham Athletic at 11/10 odds. Chris Greenacre scored the game's only goal after 24 minutes.

Relegated Crewe Alexandra were held to a 2-2 draw by League One new boys Northampton Town. Ryan Lowe gave the Alex a lead after 7 minutes but the prolific Scott McGleish levelled terms five minutes later. Crewe took the lead again through David Vaughan after 19 minutes but Andy Kirk ensured a share of the points at 12/5 odds three minutes before the interval.

New Millwall manager Nigel Spackman's blushes were spared after his side scrambled a point at home to Yeovil Town. Former Southend striker Wayne Gray gave the Glovers a 35 minute lead but Lions debutante Darren Byfield snatched a draw at odds of 5/2 with eight minutes remaining.
